One of the most commonly asked questions among brides and clients is what the difference is between airbrush and traditional makeup application. Below are some key differences to help you decide what's best for you!
Traditional Makeup
When artists use the term ‘Traditional Makeup’ they are referring to the application and use of foundation applied with tools such as brushes, sponges, and duo fiber brushes. The products most commonly used are liquids, creams, and powder. Foundations come in various formulas spanning from light to full coverage, waterproof, oil-free, etc.
Airbrush Makeup
Airbrush makeup utilizes a small makeup air compressor, an airbrush gun, and a special lightweight airbrush foundation. This foundation can be water or silicone based and is thinner than regular liquid foundation as it needs to pass through the airbrush gun. The airbrushing sprays a very fine mist on the skin pushed through with gentle air pressure from the compressor. This allows, when sprayed on properly, an even and consistent application of foundation which sits evenly on the skin. Because of the fine misted spray, airbrush makeup provides a flawless coverage, evening out skin’s imperfections while still allowing your skin to breath. Also, once dry silicone based foundation will not transfer onto clothing
Airbrush is streak-free, transfer resistant, water-proof and wears all day even through sweat and tears. The silicone based foundation is a dewy finish and feels light on the skin as it is a fine pixelated mist. It is important that if you choose the airbrush route, that you look into waxing and exfoliating the skin prior to the airbrush application as it is made to adhere to a smooth, moisturized, hair-free surface. Airbrush foundation is not recommended for very oily, very dry, problem or acne-prone skin. It is also important to note that the Airbrush technique is not to be confused with Photoshop. Since it's such a fine mist your true skin tone shows through which makes for a more natural, HD quality polished finish.
What lasts longer?
Both methods are meant to last all day with the proper use of products used such as face primer, setting powder, and a setting spray. All these products in conjunction with each other will prevent shine throughout the day and lock in the makeup to last as long as 12+ hr wear. Although powder and face primer can be eliminated with an airbrush application, as a professional makeup artist, I will take the time to use these for added staying power throughout the day.
With all of that said, it is important to keep in mind that a traditional makeup application can be at par to an airbrush application when the artist is utilizing the right tools, products and techniques.
